Update on Park Art Ideas. (For Discussion Only)

Neighborhood and Leisure Services Director Palmer said he would like to bring spots of art to the City.  He said there is a small amount of money to start an art project.  He is looking for other forms of funding but is looking for ideas to support the funding request.  He is fairly positive the funding request will be approved. Director Palmer stressed he is looking for ideas. He listed examples that could be used such as a monolith or sculptures. Director Palmer listed some parks that need art that will expose people to a new art concept.  Director Palmer expressed he is looking for ideas from members.

Member Lisiewski spoke of what the YMCA did to one of their blank walls.

Member Maxwell suggested something educational. He gave an example of the art displayed on the freeway behind the springs preserve; get artists to make some type of animal replica.

Chairman Branch proposed something like a statue of a person walking a dog or someone playing a baseball be put at Seastrand Park. He also reminded members that people come to the park to relieve stress and to relax.

Director Palmer suggested something with large letters naming the park that could also be used as a partial fence.

Recreation Supervisor Johnson mentioned the artwork that was completed at the new Amazon building. Amazon hired an artist to do artwork at the new building and it has a pop of color and causes attention.

Member Zawarus said to have community engagement and schedule events to draw neighborhood and community members together. Member Zawarus advised members to consider the maintenance aspect. He shared that he worked at the Cedar Trail Project and there was graffiti on artwork after just one week of completion. He suggested a sculpture piece that could be power washed. Recreation Supervisor Johnson concurred and added that the County uses anti-graffiti on their art work.

Director Palmer advised members to come back with 2 ideas for categories of art to share with members at the next meeting. Member Palmer added that he will talk to artists and might bring some to the next meeting for them to discuss ideas.

Receive Update from PARCAB Members from Visits to City Parks. (For Discussion Only)

Director Palmer asked members if they have any updates on their visits at the parks. Member McKenzie shared he met with park goers at Seastrand Park. He asked park goers what should go in the circle and the majority of the public agreed that a sports themed sculpture should be put in there.  He described an idea to members.

Member Ramirez stated a number of her concerns at Cheyenne Sports Complex.  Director Palmer said he would work with the correct departments to have her issues resolved.  He added the improvements and upgrades that are still to be completed at Cheyenne Sports Complex.

Member Brown said there are porta potties at Willie McCool and asked if a public restroom would be installed. Director Palmer said probably not because the cost of a permanent restroom would be at least $100,000 plus the cost of maintenance.  Director Palmer said there is a request in the works for funding to put a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) Park in some of the area to include 30 units for kids to explore STEM activities.

Member McKenzie asked for an update on new trash cans to be put at Seastrand Park. Director Palmer said parks will periodically receive new trash cans. He added that the vendor is having hard time getting trash cans in a timely manner.  Director Palmer went into detail on what upgrades to be expected at Seastrand Park.
